Martina Markota is a model, performance artist and cultural commentator. Originating from New York and carving out a career in burlesque bars this piece aims to acknowledge Martina’s classic aesthetic, pairing her vintage wardrobe with leafy avenues, cobbled streets and classical architecture of Cambridge. Shooting at higher ISO also gave the footage a more grainy look and the warm colour palate captures helps to capture the cities autumnal hues. Finally as a nod to Martina’s roots, the music is from fellow New York artists The Roots and their version of “Antiquity”, a remake of a production by the late great J-Dilla that provides the perfect warm, jazzy counterpoint to the visual.
This video was one of many collaborations with my colleague and friend Lucy Brown who organised and photographed this shoot.
